The Museum has two sites, the Ypres Tower (Rye Castle) at the Gungarden and the Museum at 3 East Street, Rye.
The Ypres Tower is a 13thC fortification which was once used as part of the town's defences, then a dwelling, a jail and is now a local museum.
There is armour and medieval weaponry for children to try, a model that shows the development of the coast and items about smuggling and law enforcement, together with other militaria.
The East Street site depicts Rye's history through prints, paintings, uniforms, costumes, toys and a Georgian fire engine. There is a display of pottery made in Rye, an exhibition on Rye between the wars, the changes to the coastline over the last 1,000 years, and also Rye's ship building industry from the late C19th.
For our younger visitors we have quizzes and activity sheets which change throughout the year, plus our popular Pugwash Quiz.
Temporary displays are put on at regular intervals.
