A Roman fortress built in 4thC as a defence against Saxon pirates, includes fine west gate. Norman castle built within Roman walls contains remains of unusual keep.
The massive outer walls and gatehouse of one of the Romans' Saxon shore forts, within which the Normans built another oval-shaped castle, now ruined.
Parts of the towers, keep, dungeon and chapel remain and Elizabethan catapult balls and cannon can also be seen. Special events are organised in summer.
We are open from 21st March 2009 until 30th September 2009 every day from 10:00 - 18:00.
From the 1st October 2009 until 31th October 2009 we are open every day from 10:00 - 16:00.
From 1st November 2009 until 31st March 2010 we are open just at weekends from 10:00 - 16:00.
